A credible net zero strategy needs a baseline, a pathway and accountable delivery.
PB Energy helps organisations move from broad ambition to a measured reduction programme that reflects operational realities, capital cycles, energy use and the organisation’s wider commercial priorities.
Start with the boundary and baseline
Before setting targets, the organisation needs to understand which emissions are included, the quality of the underlying data and which sources are material. That means establishing Scope 1 and Scope 2 emissions and developing a proportionate view of relevant Scope 3 categories.
Build a reduction hierarchy
A practical strategy prioritises genuine emissions reduction: efficiency and operational change, lower-carbon energy, renewable generation, electrification and supply-chain action. Residual emissions and any use of carbon credits should be treated transparently rather than used to avoid practical reduction work.
Translate targets into projects
- Baseline and materiality assessment
- Target and pathway development
- Energy-efficiency programme
- Renewable-energy and battery strategy
- Fleet, heating and process electrification considerations
- Scope 3 supplier and procurement engagement
- Capital-plan and asset-replacement alignment
- Governance, KPIs and annual review
Science-based targets where appropriate
Some organisations choose to align targets with the Science Based Targets initiative or customer-specific frameworks. We can help prepare the underlying inventory and reduction pathway, while keeping the strategy proportionate to the organisation’s size and reporting needs.
Five layers of a useful net zero plan.
1. Baseline
Define boundaries, data quality and current emissions.
2. Target
Set the ambition and timescales with clear assumptions.
3. Reduce
Build the technical and operational opportunity pipeline.
4. Govern
Assign ownership, budget, KPIs and review points.
5. Report
Measure progress consistently and adapt the roadmap.
However, customer expectations, supply-chain requirements, public procurement and future sustainability-reporting developments mean that many organisations benefit from establishing a credible baseline and reduction plan before they are formally required to do so.
